Working With Young People Around Porn – Training Course 12th July 2013

For the first time I will be hosting my own courses so you can book an individual place.

Sadly, due to lack of interest, I’ve had to cancel this course. Perhaps you might want to sign up to my newsletter (see the sidebar) to find out if I’m going to try again in the future or book this course in house (for more details see here)

Here’s what people have said about this course recently:

“Very impressed with course content and how it was delivered.”

“Really impressive training day.”

“Very thorough, with lots of discussion and group work.”

“Allowed everyone to interact and encouraged people to participate and explore their own views and opinions around porn.”

About the course

Porn has never been more available than it is now. Young people can access porn on their phones, in magazines, on the internet and on the TV. Young people either watch porn willingly to explore and learn about sex and sexuality, or are curious occasional consumers, or are exposed to it without their consent. The porn they see can range all the way from page 3 to BDSM pornography. Most young people now also have the means to make their own porn or sexually explicit materials.

Often the harms of porn are overstated and often we under-estimate how much young people do actually know and understand. There is little reliable evidence to demonstrate that sexually explicit materials can be harmful to young people. However many practitioners have concerns about young people watching or being exposed to this kind of material and rightly feel that they should tackle it as part of a sex and relationships programme.

This course aims to give workers the understanding, confidence and the skills to help young people to be more critical about the sexual and pornographic content that they come across.

Participants will:

  • Explore what we mean by porn, how and how much young people watch or see it, the messages they see and what they do with them.
  • Practice communicating about porn and the differences between Planet Porn and Planet Earth
  • Learn about the law, porn and sexting as well as exploring ethics
  • Explore how talking about porn can be used as a tool to talk about self-esteem, body image, boundaries, pleasure, communication, sexual safety, the law, equality, emotions, relationships and genders

All participants will receive a free download of copy of ‘Planet Porn: A Resource Pack for Working With Young People around Porn’.

About the facilitator (me)

I will be running the course (Justin Hancock) so you can be assured that you are in safe hands. All my courses are based on the DoH approved model of sexual health training, developed by Carol Painter (who trained me as a sexual health trainer in 2004). I’m a very experienced facilitator, adept at creating safe spaces for participants to feel included and able to participate. They combine work on our own values and attitudes with practical tools to use straight away.
